Anglo American planeja investir US$ 16 bi no Brasil

A Anglo American pretende investir US$ 16 bilhões no Brasil nos próximos dez anos, informou nesta segunda-feira a diretora-presidente da mineradora inglesa, Cynthia Carroll. Boa parte do investimento será destinado aos sistemas Minas-Rio e Amapá, que estão sendo adquiridos da MMX Mineração e Metálicos, de propriedade do empresário Eike Batista.
O investimento permitirá que a empresa chegue a uma produção de 100 milhões de toneladas de minério de ferro por ano no Brasil, em até dez anos.
Com isso, o plano da Anglo American prevê uma produção total de 150 milhões de toneladas de minério no mundo, sendo que 50 milhões de toneladas por ano serão oriundos da África, onde a empresa já opera.
Cynthia Carroll destacou que a produção estimada permitirá que a empresa detenha 10% do mercado total de minério. Atualmente, a produção da companhia totaliza 31 milhões de toneladas por ano, com participação de 3% do total do mercado.
“Nosso cronograma prevê que, no prazo de uma década, podemos ter 150 milhões de toneladas/ano, ou até mesmo em data anterior, já que sempre observamos possibilidades”, afirmou a executiva.
Entre as possibilidades, Cynthia não descartou um possível interesse na mineradora suíça Xstrata, que está sendo pretendida pela Vale. Questionada a respeito de um suposto interesse, Cynthia desconversou, afirmando que a Anglo American tem um “grande valor a ser desenvolvido”, mas admitiu que a companhia quer continuar fazendo aquisições a exemplo dos ativos da MMX, anunciados na semana passada.
“Nós não fechamos as portas para nada”, completou.
A presidente da Anglo American não detalhou os planos para o Brasil, mas disse querer continuar explorando no Brasil. Os sistemas Minas-Rio e Amapá somam capacidade de produção estimada de 33 milhões de toneladas por ano.
“Queremos levar o sistema Amapá ao melhor desempenho possível até o final deste ano”, ressaltou.
A Anglo American atua há 40 anos no Brasil, por meio das empresas Codemim (ferro níquel), Catalão (ferro-nióbio) e Copebrás (fosfato). Ao todo, a companhia detém 3.700 funcionários no país. A idéia, segundo Cynthia, é utilizar funcionários brasileiros treinados por Eike batista, dono da MMX, nos sistemas que estão sendo comprados.
A executiva disse ainda que há boas oportunidades de exploração de fosfato e níquel no Brasil, de níquel na Venezuela, de carvão na Colômbia, e de cobre no Chile.
Ao comentar a possibilidade de recessão nos Estados Unidos, a executiva destacou que esse é um dos motivos pelo qual a Anglo American vem buscando custos mais baixos nos projetos. Ela acrescentou que a demanda por minério de ferro continuará crescente, já que, ressaltou, o grande fator que a impulsiona é a China.
Cynthia Carroll não quis fazer comentários a respeito das negociações do reajuste do preço do minério de ferro e negou que a Anglo American tenha intenção de se desfazer de algum ativo.
“Não pensamos em vender nada. Queremos continuar crescendo em todos os negócios”, resumiu.
“Nossa ambição é ser a empresa líder de mineração em termos de escolha de funcionários, investidores, clientes, interessados e também dos governos parceiros. Isso não significa que tenhamos que ser a maior empresa, e sim a empresa que toma as decisões corretas, que dá apoio a seus ativos e a seu pessoal em todo o mundo e que pretende fazer as escolhas corretas”, complementou.
