REVISTA EXAME: Tão valioso quanto ouro

A demanda mundial pelo minério de ferro deflagra uma corrida bilionária pelas jazidas da região de Serra Azul, no interior de Minas GeraisO empresário mineiro José Mendes Nogueira, de 80 anos, sempre foi considerado um homem rico na pequena Itaúna, cidade de 82 000 habitantes localizada a pouco mais de 70 quilômetros de Belo Horizonte. Dono da mina de ferro J. Mendes, a maior jazida da região de Serra Azul, onde fica a cidade, “seu” Zé Nogueira — como é conhecido — segue há décadas uma rotina marcada por hábitos simples e pela presença assídua na missa dominical da igreja Nossa Senhora de Santana, na praça principal da cidade. Desde que a Usiminas anunciou seu interesse em comprar a J. Mendes em um comunicado ao mercado no dia 11 de janeiro, a figura do octogenário agigantou-se. “Seu” Zé Nogueira transformou-se na primeira celebridade entre os itaunenses, que ainda se assombram com a fortuna que o empresário deverá embolsar ao fim da operação: 1,8 bilhão de dólares. Com tal volume de dinheiro na conta bancária, Nogueira se transformará em um dos homens mais ricos do país. Há cinco anos, a J. Mendes, com reserva estimada de 1 bilhão de toneladas de minério de ferro, não valia nem um décimo do que a Usiminas pretende pagar por ela hoje. “Todas as dores de cabeça que eu tive em mais de 40 anos de mineração agora vão se transformar em ouro”, costuma dizer o empresário Nogueira a seus amigos de Itaúna — procurado por EXAME, ele não quis conceder entrevista.
A compra da J. Mendes pela Usiminas é o maior e mais vistoso exemplo de um processo de consolidação sem precedentes que envolve as mineradoras de Serra Azul, região formada por Itaúna e pelos municípios vizinhos de Mateus Leme, São Joaquim das Bicas, Igarapé, Brumadinho e Itatiaiuçu. Desde março do ano passado, cinco mineradoras mudaram de mãos, em operações de compra que totalizaram 2,5 bilhões de dólares (veja quadro na pág. 80). Entre os compradores estão a mineradora inglesa London Mining, a MMX, do empresário Eike Batista, e o fundo de investimento americano especializado em mineração Ferrous Resources. Além dessas empresas, gigantes globais da siderurgia e da mineração, como Arcelor Mittal, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto e Tata Steel, também estão em busca de alvos em Serra Azul, que já começam a rarear e a ficar cada vez mais caros. É uma mudança drástica em uma região cujas mineradoras até cinco anos atrás se limitavam a fornecer matéria-prima aos fabricantes de ferro-gusa, produto menos nobre da indústria siderúrgica. O que mudou o cenário nesse curto espaço de tempo foi o aquecimento da demanda por aço no mercado internacional, impulsionado basicamente pela expansão econômica e industrial da China. Com a brutal valorização do minério de ferro, o apetite das grandes mineradoras e siderúrgicas do mundo por novas reservas cresceu. Em 2005, o preço do minério aumentou 71,5% — recorde histórico –, seguido por aumentos de 19% em 2006 e 9,5% no ano passado. Para 2008, o banco Credit Suisse prevê elevação de 55%, numa perspectiva considerada por vários analistas como conservadora.
