Anglo pode investir US$ 16 bilhões no Brasil

A Anglo American anunciou que poderá realizar investimentos de mais de US$ 16 bilhões na expansão das minas de minério de ferro adquiridas da MMX Mineração e Metálicos (Minas-Rio e Amapá), para atingir o patamar de 150 milhões de t até 2017. A expectativa é que a empresa aumente em 384% sua produção de minério de ferro, atualmente de 31 milhões de t e concentrada em suas minas na África do Sul. A Anglo espera produzir 100 milhões de t do minério em Minas Gerais e no Amapá e os outros 50 milhões na mina africana de Kumba, informou Cynthia Carrol, presidente da Anglo. Os Sistemas Minas-Rio e Amapá vão fazer 33 milhões de t de minério de ferro até 2012. O investimento programado para os próximos 10 anos visa expandir esta produção em mais 67 milhões de t, principalmente em Minas Gerais. A presidente-executiva da Anglo disse que ao focar em minério de ferro a empresa não está pensando em se desfazer de nenhum de seus ativos. Segundo Cynthia, a estratégia da Anglo em relação ao minério de ferro é “priorizar sempre projetos de baixo custo, como são os do Brasil, para poder ganhar em qualquer ciclo do minério”.
